There needs to be an option for this so when tabs are really small, you don't have a 50% chance of hitting the close button by accident.

Please reconsider. If not an easy/obvious setting either within "Options" or the tab bar context menu, perhaps something in about:flags? As noted in https://crbug.com/chromium/50913#c8 by Blyzz, mouse middle-click or Ctrl-w work quite well (particularly for those of us who like keyboard shortcuts/commands). And when using Side Tabs the tab-close "x" needlessly takes up real estate.

Please reconsider. I'm new to using chrome as my primary browser and I encounter this issue multiple times each day. Closing a tab should not be something that can accidentally happen when the user is trying to change a tab.
gu...@gmail.com <gu...@gmail.com> #14
Please reconsider. The middle mouse button is sufficient for a lot of users. I often accidently click the "X" on a tab but whenever I want to close a tab I'll simply use the middle mouse button.

Middle button and keyboard shortcuts are sufficient for me and a lot of users. Please add this feature.

"We're not going to add a preference for this."
That sounds a lot bossy and absolutist, doesn't it?
I see a lot of people asking for this feature. If you don't want to add such thing to the settings UI, you could, at least, provide a way to set this feature through a .json file or through an "Other settings" ('about:config'?) panel.

I have an additional rationale for providing this option: If you have too many tabs open, the close tab button takes precedence over the throbber, so you can't tell if the tab is loading or not. I don't need a close tab button, so I'd prefer to get rid of it, but I'd be happy if for narrow tabs the throbber was still visible on the active tab.
th...@gmail.com <th...@gmail.com> #19
I've discovered a workaround for this problem: simply have so many tabs open at all times that you cannot see anything but the favicon. Then, only the active tab will have the X.

how goes with the optional elimination of tab-close-buttons ?

How about at least making it possible for an extension to be able to provide this? If I could set "display: none" on the tab-close buttons from an extension, I'd be a happy camper.
da...@gmail.com <da...@gmail.com> #23
This is my #1 annoyance with Chrome. As a power-user, I'm disappointed that such simple UI customizations are not possible without forking the project!

I encounter this frustration daily. And I have in muscle memory now, "create new tab, find the list of recently closed tabs, click the most recent one" which tells you how often I have to do it.
An option, even if (and preferably) located in about:config, would be really valuable.

I also found a recommendation to Pin tabs you don't want to close. That helps a little.
se...@gmail.com <se...@gmail.com> #32
Please reconsider. I also think that "We're not going to add a preference for this." sounds just like the software culture we chrome users wanted to avoid on the first place. I, at least, hate when the software maker thinks he know what users really need or want. And yes, I think power users do tend to use the middle click and not the annoying close button.

Description
Chrome Version : 5.0.375.55 (Official Build 47796)
Sometimes when lots of tabs opened, I accidentally press tab close "X" button instead of switching to this tab.
What is the expected result?
There is an option to disable tab close buttons, so user makes use of middle click to close tab and left click to switch.
