If the user selects a photo it may make sense to apply some kind of alpha mask to make it fit nicely into the UI.

I don't necessarily need *more* icons to choose from. If I could simply overwrite some of the default ones (e.g. ninja, dog, cat, pokemon, etc).
as...@gmail.com <as...@gmail.com> #13
Additionally, I do not think that having the icon associated (necessarily) with a google+ account is a good idea. I use different profiles/users for different uses. One for Trello, one for banking, one for FaceBook, one for testing applications, etc etc etc... This is my primary reason for using Chrome. I would not want to have a different google account for each profile simply to have a custom icon.

Adding custom avatars would mostly solve the problem (and would be the easiest from an engineering standpoint), but I also think we need to provide a much better set of default avatars.
The variance of personalities within the current set of avatars is about 10% of what it could be, even given the exact same number of icons. So I think that variety in the default selection can and should be improved too.

So I use chrome profiles as a de-facto operating system for web related stuff, and would like to see the custom avatars but more as 'icons'. I'd like, for instance to have 'Web Development' be the Web-globe-with-a-hammer icon, and of course the others be what I think typifies them. That means being at the very least to be able to specify a URL for an image, but most usefully both that or a disk-housed image.
rh...@gmail.com <rh...@gmail.com> #25
I would stop using chromium, in that case. I'd have to find another solution to the way I work...
it seems #13 (tonyfraz) does something similar to me, so I'm not alone.

Power users, the ones most likely to use the custom avatar icons, are likely knowledgable enough to edit and size whatever image they want, as there are a multitude of image editors available. I don't think they will need much hand holding.
Syncing with facebook or google plus or anything else just adds complexity to a feature that can otherwise be quite simple.
sl...@gmail.com <sl...@gmail.com> #41
Re: #39, do you think it's important to sync the profile image with the rest of the profile data (bookmarks, history, open tabs, etc.)?
If a URL were used to specify the image, whether the image itself is then stored in the profile won't matter most of the time. If the user accesses their profile from a different computer, Chrome can use the URL to retrieve the image. There's a small question of which profile image should be used if Chrome is unable to retrieve the image from the URL, though.
What I like best about using a URL for the profile image is that Chrome could periodically check for an update and use the latest image available. I would tell Chrome to get my profile image from my own website or from Gravatar, either of which I could update and everything that refers to them would change at the same time.
If a local file were specified for the profile image, how would that be stored? Would it be a URL with a "file:" scheme? Would the image be read from the file and stored in the profile, which could also be synced with the rest of the profile?
[Deleted User] <[Deleted User]> #42
Some nice enhancements would be the URL specification described by #40, integration with the OS account or other social services, and support for animated gifs! I would expect for the image to be synced with my profile.
n0...@gmail.com <n0...@gmail.com> #43
used to work. Since I mainly use Google products almost exclusively this
came in very handy. All my profiles are attached to Google dashboard so
when I synced the Chrome profile with the right Google profile it grabbed
the usual stuff like my bookmarks, apps and extensions but also my profile
pic and name. It actually never occurred to me to have it sync with
Facebook or any other service out there.
I'd like whatever is easier to code and implement. Either let us choose our
own custom avatars or let it sync with the Google profile again.

- Quit Chrome.
- Open Terminal (you'll find this in the Utilities folder in Applications).
- Type exactly this after the dollar sign:
/Applications/Google\ Chrome.app/Contents/MacOS/Google\ Chrome --gaia-profile-info
- Chrome opens with my profile picture where the avatar picture used to be. Awesome!
- Quit Terminal. Terminal asks if you want to terminate the current process; click yes.
- Chrome and Terminal both quit.
After that, Chrome opens every time with the appropriate Google profile picture in the upper right-hand corner, just as we have all wanted. Again, my thanks to François. Hope this helps!

I found this raised issue by searching for a solution and came across this page...
Not only does that page link you back to here, but there are instructions on how to manually apply your own image as a user icon (see the response from mtd - 2nd answer at the time of writing). I tried it and it does work, but the "throw away" comment about making sure the values are in alphabetical order is strangely correct (I say strangely because this is a standard data format that I have never known to require you put the keynames in alphabetical order).
To add this functionality to Chrome would be trivial at worst, and yes I am a software developer so that's an educated comment.

le...@gmail.com <le...@gmail.com> #92
Same reason as I mentioned in #63, Gravatar doesn't always work. For example, I have several accounts with the same Gravatar -- a picture of my face. It doesn't help. I want to use a company logo for my company account, etc. The Gravatar is for other people to distinguish me, while the Chrome profile icons are for myself to distinguish my accounts. They are different.
Chrome already has a list of icons to choose from. All we need is the ability to edit this list and add custom icons. I don't think it is very hard for Google to implement this.

The thread seems to have derailed a bit, what with people discussing the use of G+ profile pics or Gravatar (both of which are lackluster substitutes for a custom profile image feature), but the original request -- i.e. the ability to supply custom images as profile images -- hasn't been addressed by anybody in the Chromium team, other than to say "it's not currently possible" or "there's a workaround for G+ profiles".
Like many people have stated in previous comments, it would be a very useful feature for people (like myself) who would like to be able to effectively identify each of my profiles simply by looking at the icon overlay (and without having to memorize which random icon of the few provided by Chrome is associated with which profile). It's a bit weird, in fact, that this wasn't the original design in the first place; it's been many years since I've seen an application that allows the use of avatars but restrict them to a few pre-installed, seemingly-random images.
[Deleted User] <[Deleted User]> #111
no...@chromium.org <no...@chromium.org> #112
This issue is not fixed, but it has also not dropped off the radar. We've recently focused on redesigning the Profiles UI, because a very small number of users even knew profiles were an option in Chrome. Making them discoverable was a priority, as improving a feature very few people use is hard to get right.
This is still a feature we'd like to address, it's just a matter of finding the time to do it. I've assigned it to myself, so with a bit of luck in the next release I'll get a chance to look at it. I know this doesn't sound as promising as it should, but hopefully it's better than nothing :)
co...@gmail.com <co...@gmail.com> #113
I just wanted to put the thread back on track, because many of the more recent comments were about the G+ avatar workaround, and it seemed the original request was being left on the sidelines. And I also wanted a more straightforward answer from the Chromium team (which you provided in your last comment -- thanks! :D) about whether this was being considered for a future release or not.

The current avatar set does not do any justice for the profile system, they are irrelevant, serve no function in user experience, and are not quite aesthetically pleasing either. (IE: if I have a profile for a client who's web page I am developing, I would much rather see their logo so I can quickly find the profile, instead of a cat or cheeseburger... Or if working in a team environment, actual user photos could be used, especially if there is a large number of team members to the point where current avatars are being used multiple times.)

ISTM we could go one of three roads here:
(1) Use the G+ APIs to fetch the avatar on Chrome sign-in (but how to keep it in sync)? We should already have this for CrOS.
(2) Build sync integration for Plus profile data and pull the avatar from that data store.
(3) Build an extension API and let third parties build this. Still, I feel the out-of-box behavior should the the G+ avatar so perhaps this is not the best approach.

Profiles make my job so, so much easier. I have a personal profile, one for work, and one for each client. This means I don't have to wrestle with various account logins (Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and it keeps my browsing histories and bookmarks neatly separated.
I've been using brand colors to differentiate the different profiles but being able to use logos would be so much better.
Related note: I could really use a scrolling window of icons—the default window size shows eight and I currently have 14.

Background: I am a consultant, I work with many companies. They love to give me an address at their company. Often this is a google account, sometimes office 365, etc... I WAS organizing my browsing using Firefox Tab Groups (and then the plugin to which it was moved). Now that plugin appears to be going away. Chrome profiles seem like a great alternative way of organizing the N clients I presently have work open for. (plus I have my personal google account and the google account for my consulting company)... I've got accounts and work contexts coming out my ears.
Utility: This feature would be useful if it allows me to associate an image with a Chromium (or eventually chrome?) profile. It would be VERY useful to be able to identify the contexts I have open in various profiles at a glance, with images that have intrinsic meaning (company logos, race car for my racing hobby, etc).
Requirements:
1.) It's important to realize that this is distinct from a google login, since sometimes they give me office 365... and there's no google log in related to the context. I also have several hobbies and might well have a profile to segregate that information as well.
2.) The image should appear in CTRL-TAB icons, and on the menu bar icons (dock for me in mac). Personally I don't care about short cuts, but I'm sure some will want that too.
3.) The image chosen should be visually dominant, so that recognition of a context is easy, and I don't have to squint to figure out what the image in the little badge is. The chosen image with a chrome/chromium badge on it would be ideal.
4.) Supplied images should be scaled/stretched to fit the icon space. If this result is not desirable users should supply an appropriately scaled image.
5.) The interface for inputing the image file/link should be labeled with instructions that specify what the ideal image parameters are.
6.) At a minimum j-peg and PNG images should be supported, animated images formats might need to be disallowed for performance reasons (or not?).
7.) transparent/translucent backgrounds should be supported, if the platform/location where the image is shown supports this. This would allow careful users to design images that are recognizable by shape as well as the image itself.
8.) For obvious security reasons (think spoofing etc...) this image should not be accessible, modifiable or replaceable by plugins, or javascript on the page.

In Chrome User Data directory, I had a folder "Avatars". It may or may not matter, but I had "Google profile name and icon" disabled when I found this. Not all of the profile images showed up there, but all of the ones I had ever had selected were there, so you might want to change your image & restart a few times to get a bigger selection. Then I replaced one of them with the image I wanted, i.e. I had a "pc.png" that I renamed to "avatar_generic_orange.png" after deleting the actual orange-dude-avatar.
Then when I restarted Chrome and went to my Settings and clicked into my current profile, I don't remember exactly what I did but I seem to recall not seeing the new image right away, then clicking on the image I'd replaced, the orange dude, and having the new one appear. The images switched themselves around a bit. I clicked on my new image and then it was set. It replaced itself on my toolbar (which is what I care about) and also in the user images under "Manage other people".
Again, it went away after a restart, but it's *something*.

Allowing custom avatars for non-google account profiles will address all the use cases listed by other users here. As an alternative, dramatically expanding the presets, with consideration for these use cases (e.g. adding letters, numbers, plain colours, an 'office building', house, male, female, child etc.) would go someway to doing so - if there is some fundamental reason why custom avatars aren't going to be considered.

and work fine for me. I am not sure where all the vitriol from the other
users is coming from. May be if there was a way to add custom avatars for
chrome profiles without a Google account in them.

example would be rename" avatar_abstract_pizza.png" to "Connie avatar_abstract_pizza.png" and then add your own picture of Connie with a file name of "avatar_abstract_pizza.png"
works - but it seems hard work to achieve what could be a very simple objective

Avatar:
C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Avatars\avatar_abstract_melon.png (file name is just an example, apparently Chrome copies this file in here; upon re-launch I could see my new file that I replaced this with show up)
Taskbar icon:
C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Google Profile.ico (I replaced this with my own .ico but so far I haven't seen this change, maybe requires reboot)
Also search the code base for "avatars" to see what's going on.

Working on a location with people with mental and visual disabilities, we setup multiple profiles for different users. This is helpful and they can use there own bookmarks, extensions and zoom settings.
So far the default icons are not visual different enough. We have prepared good icons, but we cannot attach them. For the sake of inclusivity, where Google say it stands for, this feature would be the solution. So that also people that are visual challenged can work with Chrome and custom, recognizable profiles.

IF Chromium let us choose our own images, I could make them all match.
Today, the best I can do is set all of them to plain grey (no image). At least this way, they all look the same and I can select based on the text name of the profile.
Still, most amazing, that this request has gone unanswered for 10+ years.
I can only conclude that it is by design, that Google makes this difficult. Separate (not logged in to Google) profiles help privacy aware users silo their browsing activity by profile, hampering trackers efforts to build a complete profile.

Wow, just wow. I first posted a single +1 and obvious use case ohh, back in 2014, and that was after it had been opened originally in 2011. Since then there have been many major changes, refactorings, architecture choices, etc. etc.
And many other products from many other companies and individual websites that have mastered the very simple technology of uploading your own custom image to display everywhere. How in Bog's name has this one thing just not been addressed?! Sadly, all the higher-up's who worked in Google Engineering that I am friends with have left for more monies and better companies, so I can't backchannel this and have to come in as just a J. Random User, but hey, that is fine. You shouldn't have to have pull to get a major obvious feature implemented, especially when it has been implemented before in not only your products, but as I said, in EVERY. OTHER. THING.
EVERYWHERE.
In 2025 custom icons, emojis, memojis, etc. etc. are just table stakes for a modern application. Come on! This bug was opened before some of your engineers were even born.
Fix it. Now. </end-rant>

Wow. It's been almost 14 years since this issue was first filed. It's a relatively minor issue, but also one that should be EASY to resolve quickly.
The profile image could be taken from the user's Google account if the profile is signed in to Google. Otherwise, it could be chosen from the user's filesystem or a URL to an online resource could be provided. It's all pretty simple. Isn't it‽

That's a disappointing work ethic.

I'm on this thread from way back wanting this feature and I agree it isn't
big but complaining about work ethic and difficulty isn't cool.
Our preferences have been recorded, and we can also put in our own PR if we
really wanted to.

Ah come on! 🙂
I might agree that comments like mine aren't "cool" if they had come a few months or even a couple of years after this issue were opened. But the issue has been around for 14 years and has slipped through the hands of a couple of Google employees.
I WOULD open a PR for this if I had the time to do it. I do "really want" to do it, but I have a full-time job of my own and a family to raise IRL.

I am glad to see that #221 woke me back up to this thread and my reply perhaps awoke a few others. A humble suggestion for the group that perhaps could pull this issue (which ofc is not a bug, but a feature request) out of the forgotten crack it has been in for 14 years. Now, this violates several ancient tenants of good issue tracking hygiene, but… sigh… I will suggest it: gather a few simple responses, punch up the writing to be short and sweet, and… open a new issue. Link to this one ofc, but surfacing it as something entirely new may show it to the new (and I imagine young, and hungry) GOOG ppl paid to work on Chromium and get them excited about it.
Though thinking about this whole 14 year travail, the #1 reason that anything gets done in any computer program is that it scratches an itch that some programmer has, so they go out and do it. I find it hard to fathom that no one who has their head wrapped around what I must imagine is the giant codebase of Chromium and uses it in all sorts of advanced ways has never thought to theirselves "hey, I love all my profiles, it would be cool if I could put custom pics on each one."

Is there a different place that people are still seeing preset avatars that they can't change, or something different that is being requested...?

Additionally, your Google account profile icon gets overlaid on each of your open window's icons, which leads to a number of problems - I use the same icon for my personal and business Google accounts, but don't want the windows confused. Additionally for my primary Chrome profile it's just really annoying (and not helpful) to have my face overlaid on top of every window's icon, and with a custom Chrome profile icon that's fixable (I'm currently modifying Chrome's cache to replace my account icon's image with an invisible PNG in a scheduled task to work around this problem).

Between Chromium and downstream Vivaldi, I have a couple dozen profiles. Only two are signed into Google Accounts. Yes, custom avatars would make my life much easier. For those that would confuse this request with Google Account avatars: they serve two completely different purposes. The Account avatar refers to a person, often a head-shot photo. While multiple Browser Profiles are occasionally used by multiple people, in place of the better solution of having separate computer user profiles, the more common use of browser profiles is to silo browsing of a single user into categories like: work, home, social, recreation, ad infinitum.
